Mohammed Assaf was born in Libya to a Palestinian family from Rafah, Gaza — a refugee story layered on a refugee story. He grew up singing at weddings while his peers played football, carrying a voice that was too big for the rooms he was in. In 2013, he crossed from Gaza into Egypt on a mission to audition for Arab Idol Season 2. Registration had closed. He was turned away at the door. Another Palestinian contestant — already inside — passed his number through the gate so Assaf could take his place. He walked in and won the whole competition on June 22, 2013. An entire region exhaled.
His story was later adapted into the film "The Idol" (2015), directed by Hany Abu-Assad. That same year, UNRWA appointed him Goodwill Ambassador — recognizing that his voice had become something larger than music.
